When they got to Seton’s place they found Collins sitting on the doorstep holding an ice pack to his chin. His partner stood beside him.

“The little guy packs a mean punch,” Collins said ruefully.

“You lost him?”

“We lost him,” Collins’ partner said. “Though God knows how. I got into that room only ten seconds after Joe, and they were already gone.”

“There’s a lot about this case that doesn’t make sense,” Mike replied. “It’s nice to see our batting average isn’t improving.”

Collins looked downcast.

“We do have something on tape though,” he said. “That’s how we knew they’d got into the house.”

“Let’s hear it,” Mike said.

All four of them got into the parked car and Collins got ready to play back the recording.

“Where was the bug?” Sam asked.

“In the light fitting. And here’s where we picked up something.”

Collins ran the tape.

“What?” a female voice said.

It was followed by a loud bang.

“Time to go,” the voice whispered soon after that. “The cops are coming.”

“I’ll just be a second,” a man replied.

“I don’t think we’ve got that long.”

“Got them,” the man said.

“Freeze,” another voice said. There was the sound of a scuffle then they heard Collins’ partner say, “Joe? You OK?”

Collins stopped the tape,

“That’s it?” Mike said.

Collins nodded.

“What did he mean, Got them?” Sam asked.

“He was holding two red documents, about yeah size,” Collins said, holding his hands apart.

“British Passports?” Mike asked.

“Could be.”

“Must be,” Sam said.

Mike got out of the car.

“Put out a call to have the airports watched. Find out what his passport number is and get it blocked.”

Minutes later he was back in Seton’s front room, staring at the large map of Scotland.

“That’s where he’s headed,” he said to Sam. “That’s where the answer is. My spidey sense is tingling.”

“I don’t think the Captain’s going to sanction a trip. Do you?”

“Let’s go see,” Mike replied.
